Designing the Best Home Security System for Your Area

    Author: Oswald Melman

While you are researching the different methods of protecting your home and family, you will encounter a number of different recommendations from experts in one niche or another. Home alarm programmers can tell you why they designed an alarm system in a certain way and why it is one of the most difficult to bypass. Ex-law enforcement agents can offer advice on popular criminal methods. Meanwhile, home security companies will offer proof of effectiveness over the years. Much of it will probably come in handy while go about your business. However, remember how case-specific every home security plan should be. What’s worked in one corner of New Jersey might not work in a suburb of Santa Barbara, and vice versa. Here are five tips for tailoring your security plan for your own specific needs.

    1. Adjust the volume based on surface area. When your alarm sounds, it isn’t enough to let the criminal and your dog know that it’s ringing. Make your alarm loud enough that at least neighbors down the street will know something is going on. For more rural settings, give security and law enforcement a hand in getting to your door quickly -- use a powerful siren and strobe lights to send the message loud and clear. Time is going to be of the essence in case of a robbery attempt.

    2. Have you gone heavy on tech and light on brawn? Some alarm systems are as smart as some people walking the streets, but certain criminals can toss that worry out the window if there aren’t the basic precautions taken around your home. Make sure the windows and doors are built tough and are not vulnerable to simple smashes and breaks with a deft kick or small hammer.

    3. Don’t go it alone. The one thing about certain neighborhoods is how much the neighbors need to depend on one another. Whether everyone keeps to themselves or isn’t fazed by alarms sounding, you don’t want to the victim of local apathy. Set up a system of cooperation with at least one family in the neighborhood.

    4. Keep your lighting under control. If you are in the heart if the city or highly residential area and (wisely) installed some security lighting around your house, you should keep the neighbors in mind. Make sure the arc of the lighting doesn’t end up in someone’s living room or, worse, bedroom. In general, if you make the powerful lights hit your front door and back windows, you are the only one who will notice. It’s a more effective strategy anyway.

    5. Checking your home alarm on all fronts. In many cases, you might find the capabilities of a home alarm system impossible to resist. However, are you going to be unsure of its total coverage? Are you going to get burned by an alarm that detects everything -- even that which is in no way threatening? Intense coverage can be a nuisance when an alarm isn’t smart enough.
